Samsung’s next big things: Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ announced

Today, Samsung announced its latest flagship Android phones, both available for pre-order immediately and available to purchase in the U.S. beginning August 21. The Galaxy Note 5 (pictured above) is the latest entry in the Korean company’s large-screen Note lineup of devices. The Galaxy S6 edge+ (pictured below) is a larger version of the Galaxy S6 edge, which was released earlier in the year, and a follow-up to last year’s Galaxy Note Edge.

The internal specs for the two phones announced today are identical — including an octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 5.7-inch screen, 16MP rear camera and 5MP front camera, 3000mAh battery and storage options of 32GB or 64GB. The main differentiating factor for the Note 5 is its S-Pen — a defining feature of the Note line — while the curved screen is the notable feature of the S6 edge+.

Both phones feature fast charging, wireless charging (with separate wireless charging pad accessory) and fast wireless charging, allowing the phone to get a full charge in two hours or less. Two things missing from the phones that consumers have come to expect from Samsung devices are a removable battery and microSD card slot.

The phones will be available from Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile beginning August 21, with prices varying by carrier. The Note 5 is available in black and white while the S6 edge+ is available in black or gold.

For people who long for the days when Blackberry was still relevant, Samsung is also offering a keyboard cover for each phone that gives the phone a Blackberry-type look. I’m not sure how good of an idea emulating Blackberry is in 2015.
