Samsung announces Galaxy S8, S8+: Here are the details

This could be a critical year for Samsung after last year’s launch of the Galaxy Note 7, which had to be recalled because of a number of instances of the phones’ batteries catching fire. The Korean company needs a big launch of its latest flagship devices to try to make up for some of the losses that came about from the Note 7 situation. The first Samsung flagships to hit the market in 2017 are the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, which the company officially unveiled earlier today.

The phones share similar specs, with the main differences being screen size and the batteries. The S8 features a 5.8″ Super AMOLED Quad HD+ screen with 2960×1440 resolution (571ppi) while the S8+ is bigger, with a 6.2″ Super AMOLED Quad HD+ display at with the same resolution (529ppi). With the bigger screen, the S8+ naturally has a bigger battery, clocking in at 3500mAh, compared to 3000mAh for its smaller counterpart.

galaxys8

Both feature a Snapdragon 835 processor (in the US) with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage (with support for microSD cards up to 256GB capacity). The devices feature 8MP cameras on the front and 12MP rear cameras. They’ll ship with Android 7.0 Nougat with the typical connectivity with WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, 4G LTE and GPS, One thing that sets the S8 series apart is they are the first mobile phones to support Bluetooth 5.0. They each have a USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack, bucking the trend of companies leaving that out of phones. They also feature IP68 water resistance.

These are also the first devices to include Samsung’s new digital assistant Bixby. They are compatible with accessories, including Samsung’s latest Gear VR headset and the newly introduced Samsung DeX, a dock that allows you to use the phone as a computer with a desktop experience.

The phones come in a variety of colors (which may not be available through all carriers and retailers), including midnight black, orchid gray, arctic silver, maple gold and coral blue.

The phones will be available to pre-order — with various pre-order bonuses — tomorrow, with an expected release date of April 21. They’ll be available for all major carriers — including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular — and at retailers including Best Buy and Amazon. Pricing varies, but generally ranges from $720-750 for the S8 and $820-850 for the S8+ if you pay full price up front or monthly payments of roughly $30-35 if you go with an installment plan through your carrier.

Samsung announces Galaxy S7, S7 edge: Here are the details

LG already announced its latest phone, the G5, earlier today at Mobile World Congress, and now its Samsung’s turn to provide details of its latest devices, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Although the specs and design only feature slight improvements over last year’s models, the South Korean manufacturer did add some features that were noticeably absent from the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge: expandable storage via microSD and water resistance.

Among the specs that are identical between the two devices are a Snapdragon 820 processor powering the phones, 4 GB of RAM, with internal storage options of 32 GB or 64 GB, along with the aforementioned microSD slot, a new Dual Pixel 12MP camera on the rear, which Samsung says will provide for sharper images in low-light situations, and a 5MP front camera. Both phones, of course, run Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and include the latest Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity.

The main areas where the phones diverge is in screen size and battery capacity, although both have non-removable batteries. The standard S7 comes with a 5.1″ Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 2560×1440 resolution (577 ppi), while the S7 edge bumps the screen up to 5.5″, with the same resolution to give it a slightly lower 534 ppi). The S7 battery has a 3,000 mAh capacity, while the S7 edge gets bumped up to 3,600 mAh to account for the larger screen size.

In addition to the microSD slot (with support for up to 200 GB cards) and water and dust resistance (IP68), Samsung added an always-on display that allows you to see the time or select notifications without having to touch the device.

Both phones are expected to be available in mid-March, with availability likely to include all of the major U.S. carriers — including AT&TVerizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular. Color options include silver, black, white and gold — although not all are expected to be available in all countries or at all carriers/retailers. Full details about the phones can be found at Samsung’s site here.

There is a pre-order promo that begins tomorrow, February 23, that will give people who pre-order either phone a free Gear VR virtual-reality headset, along with a six-game bundle — a package that Samsung says is valued at $150.

Below, you will find images comparing the specs of the S7 and S7 edge to last year’s models, a photo gallery of the new phones showcasing the different colors, and Samsung’s official press release with complete details of the S7 and S7 edge.

PRESS RELEASE:

Samsung Unveils Next Generation Smartphones at the Core of its Connected Galaxy Experience
February 22, 2016

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge couple sleek design with powerful performance including advanced camera features, water resistance, and external memory

BARCELONA – February 21, 2016 – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd today announced the newest additions to the Galaxy family of products, Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Created for today’s consumer lifestyle, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge lead the industry with a refined design, more advanced camera, streamlined software functionality and unparalleled connectivity to a galaxy of products, services, and experiences.

“We believe in a world that is brighter, sharper, more convenient, and more fun. We strive to deliver on that vision with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge by marrying elegant design with functionality and providing a seamless mobile experience,” said DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “We empower consumers with technology to help them get more out of life and will continue to push the frontier of what’s possible.”

Advanced Camera: High Quality Images No Matter the Time of Day or Location

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge introduce the first Dual Pixel camera on a smartphone, delivering brighter and sharper images, even in low light. Thanks to the revolutionary Dual Pixel technology, brighter lens with wider aperture, and bigger pixel, the camera has a faster shutter speed and a more accurate autofocus even in low-light conditions. Motion Panorama, a new camera mode, brings movement to traditional panoramic photos, giving the user a completely immersive visual experience.

Refined Design and Function

The 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 and 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 edge are constructed with 3D glass and metal – all in a sleek design with durability and ergonomic curves for a comfortable grip. From work to play, the device’s new Always-On Display, gives users a simplified, zero touch experience where they don’t need to worry about missing a call or important notification.

Without compromising design, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge both have increased utility with IP68 water and dust resistance. Edge UX, the advanced edge experience available on Galaxy S7 edge, provides convenience and increased efficiency by creating easy shortcuts to users’ most loved functions such as email, selfie mode, panorama mode or third party applications.

Enhanced Performance: From Charging to Gaming

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge deliver fast wired and wireless charging technology. Additionally, the hybrid SIM card tray allows users to insert a microSD card for up to 200GB of additional storage and in some select countries, the tray can be used with a dual SIM card.

Samsung also made significant hardware and software updates to optimize gaming performance on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The powerful processer and bigger battery capacity ensure longer playing time, and the internal cooling system keeps the device from overheating. Game Launcher, a new add-on for gamers, allows users to manage battery consumption and minimize notifications. Additionally, users can record their gaming experience or share their screen to play with others. Paired with Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Vulkan API gives users the ability to play high-performance graphic games with lower battery consumption.

The Galaxy Experience

Samsung continues to push the boundaries of hardware, software and services to create devices that are designed to improve how consumers connect, share, organize and get more out of life. The company is redefining what is possible, beyond the limits of today’s technology, by introducing a constellation of seamless mobile experiences.

Whether it’s the seamless connection between Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge and the new Gear S2 Classic to monitor fitness, or connecting with Gear VR to “travel” the world – Samsung redefines what’s possible for the mobile experience and beyond.

Beyond the phone, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge users can also get the best mobile payment service with Samsung Pay; it’s secure, easy-to-use and accepted almost anywhere. Protected by Samsung KNOX, fingerprint scanning and advanced tokenization, Samsung Pay works with NFC (Near Field Communication), MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) and Barcode technology, making mobile payments available to more merchants and consumers than ever before.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be available starting mid-March 2016.

LG announces its latest flagship phone, the G5, its answer to Samsung’s Galaxy S7

The annual Mobile World Congress is taking place right now in Barcelona, and in recent years it has become the place where top Android manufacturers, like LG and Samsung announce their latest flagship phones. This year is no exception, with LG having announced its G5 and Samsung announcing both the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

lg-g5-1

The follow-up to last year’s G4, the G5 bucks the trend of phones getting bigger screens; it has a 5.3″ Quad HD IPS Quantum display, down from the G4’s 5.5″ screen but sharing the same 2560×1440 resolution, giving it a slightly higher 554 ppi. Its dual-camera setup includes 16MP camera on the back (8MP wide-angle) and an 8MP shooter on the front. Internal specs include a Snapdragon 820 processor and 4 GB of RAM to go along with 32 GB of internal storage, with a microSD slot that allows for expandable memory of up to an additional 2 TB.

The phone includes a 2,800 mAh removable battery — which has a little less capacity than last year’s 3,000 mAh power source — that is part of a new mechanism that can remove the bottom of the phone to add additional modules, which include a camera grip that adds an extra 1,200 mAh of battery power and an audio attachment that provides high-end sound powered by Bang & Olufsen.

As for the phone’s body, it is made out of metal and has changed LG’s traditional setup of having the power and volume keys on the back of the device. Now, just the power key resides back there (along with the fingerprint scanner that has become ubiquitous on flagship phones), with the volume keys moved back to the side of the device, where most manufacturers have them.

LG is also offering accessories that can be easily paired with the phone and managed through a preloaded app. Those include the LG Roller Bot, a small, remote-controlled robot with built-in speakers and camera; the LG 360 CAM, a 360-degree remote-controlled camera; and LG 360 VR a virtual-reality headset that connects to the phone through its USB-C port.

PRESS RELEASE:

LG DEBUTS THE G5, ITS FIRST EVER MODULAR SMARTPHONE

LG’s Newest Idea Revealed At Mobile World Congress 2016 Complete With Friends

BARCELONA, Feb. 21, 2016 — LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its highly anticipated LG G5 smartphone, a brand new design with not only a sleek, metal uni-body featuring a Slide-out Battery and a Modular Type design that gives a greater smartphone experience. Complete with LG Friends, a collection of companion devices, the G5 can be transformed into a digital camera, Hi-Fi player and more.

Encased in a sleek metal aluminum body and Slide-out Battery to easily swap out a depleted battery for a fully charged one in seconds, the LG G5 surpasses the visual experience of its predecessor, the LG G4.

First, the G5’s 135-degree wide angle lens lets you choose between standard or wide angle lens to get more in the shot. Second, the Always-on Display makes notifications just a glance away with the time, date and more available anytime without waking the G5. Third, the 3D Arc Glass featured in the smartphone’s 5.3-inch display creates a gentle curve and a smooth colorful metal surface through an advanced microdizing process which takes anodized aluminum to a whole new level.

Furthermore, the insulative antenna is invisibly integrated into the body without disrupting the seamless look of the metal uni-body. LG designers took the metal body concept one step further by adding a Shiny Cut edge for added contrast and better “hand-feel”.

LG’s First Modular Type Smartphone
LG’s innovative Modular Type design gives the LG G5 the ability to transform into a digital camera, Hi-Fi player and more all while keeping its traditional removable battery in a full metal uni-body design for the first time ever.

LG CAM Plus
The LG CAM Plus is a versatile camera module that can be attached through the battery slot to deliver a comfortable grip and convenient control of a standalone camera. The LG CAM Plus provides physical buttons for power, shutter, record, zoom, LED indicator and comfortable grip. It also offers intuitive auto focus and exposure lock, features usually found on standalone digital cameras. When attached to the LG G5, it provides an additional battery capacity of 1,200mAh to allow for longer shooting times for more fun and enjoyment.

LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY
The LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY is an innovative portable Hi-Fi DAC audio player developed in collaboration with B&O PLAY to meet the needs of those who seek to enjoy top-notch sounds that have traditionally only been available through high-end audio devices. LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY stands out for its simple yet elegant Scandinavian design as well as premium sound technology. In addition to the 32-bit Hi- Fi DAC upsampling technology first introduced on the LG V10, LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY also supports 32-bit 384KHz high-definition audio playback. LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY can be used either as a module with the LG G5 or as a separate Hi-Fi DAC by connecting to any smartphone or PC.

Extreme Wide Angle Lens and Advanced UX
Reflecting LG’s longstanding reputation as a leader in smartphone cameras, the LG G5 has two cameras on the rear: one with a standard 78-degree lens and another with a 135- degree wide angle lens, the widest available in any smartphone. The 135-degree lens on the LG G5 offers a viewing angle that is approximately 1.7 times wider than those of existing smartphone cameras and 15 degrees wider than the human eye’s field of view. The wide angle lens makes it easier for users to capture more landscape, taller buildings or larger groups without having to position oneself further from the subject.

The LG G5 features a collection of powerful photo effects including Pop-out Picture, Film Effect and Auto Shot. Pop-out Picture combines images taken by the standard and wide angle lens to create a picture-in-a-frame effect. Film Effect can apply nine different film emulators to an image while Auto Shot is an enhanced camera UX which automatically captures the perfect selfie shot when a face is recognized.

Always-on Display for Enhanced Convenience
The 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum display on the LG G5 offers an Always-on feature, the first on a main smartphone display. The concept of the Always-on Display was first introduced in the LG V10 as the Second Screen and now that feature has evolved on to the main display to show the time, date and battery status continuously even when the G5 is in sleep mode. This means that you can always see the time at a glance, even during important meetings or when your hands are full.

To minimize power consumption, LG redesigned the display driver IC memory and power management function so that the display’s backlight only illuminates one small part of the overall display. Thanks to this technology, the Always-on Display requires only 0.8 percent of the battery’s full capacity per hour to operate. With consumers turning on their smartphones up to 150 times a day mostly to just check the time, the G5’s Always-on Display will make a notable difference in the life of the battery over the course of the day.

Another advanced display feature in the LG G5 is Daylight Mode, which gives the G5 exceptional outdoor visibility beyond that of current auto brightness technology. Daylight Mode detects surrounding light conditions and instantaneously increases or decreses the brightness of the display, up to 850 nits. Even before your eyes have adjusted to the different lighting conditions, the G5 will be ready.

Diverse Range of Companion Devices
With the G5, LG is introducing a paradigm-shifting smartphone ecosystem — the LG Playground. With this, LG aims to strengthen the ties with its partners and introduce various devices and supporting programs to fully maximize the LG Playground.

As part of the ecosystem, LG is introducing a wide range of companion devices, aptly called LG Friends, to deliver fun while providing a new mobile experience far beyond traditional smartphone boundaries.

LG 360 VR
The LG 360 VR is a VR goggle that can be connected with the G5 via a dedicated cable and works exclusively with the G5 to simulate a 130-inch TV viewed from two meters away. It has a stylish design that is foldable so that users can easily carry and watch VR content anytime, anywhere. Unlike other VR devices that require a smartphones to be inserted in the device, the LG 360 VR weighs only 118g (4.16 ounces) and is just onethird as heavy as competing VR goggles while delivering a resolutaion of 639 ppi. The device is compatible with 360-degree images and videos captured with LG 360 CAM as well as all Google Cardboard content.

LG 360 CAM
The LG 360 CAM is a compact 360-degree angle camera equipped with two 13MP 200- degree wide angle cameras, 1,200mAh battery and 4GB internal memory, which can be supplemented by a microSD card. The LG 360 CAM can be easily connected to the LG G5 allowing users to create 360-degree content. The LG 360 CAM provides 2K video and 5.1 surround channel recording on three microphones to help users effortlessly create high-quality 360-degree contents. Thanks to the partnership with Google, images taken with the 360 CAM can be uploaded to Google Street View and YouTube360, adding the fun of sharing creative contents with others. The images will also be available to view on the LG 360 VR or other smartphones or devices that are capable of 360-degree content.

LG Rolling Bot
The LG Rolling Bot is a companion device that rolls like a ball while capturing images and videos with its embedded 8MP camera. Not just a toy, the LG Rolling Bot can be used as a monitoring system for the home, pet care companion as well as a remote controller for compatible home appliances. With an IP camera connectable via Wi-Fi, users can remotely monitor the interior of their homes with the LG G5 via live streaming.

LG Tone Platinum

Designed for audiophiles as well as anyone who considers audio performance a top-priority in a smartphone, H3 by B&O PLAY works with all Android smartphones.

LG Smart Controller
The LG Smart Controller allows users to easily control certain drones. With the LG Smart Controller, users can check the video stream from the drone through the LG G5 in real time and control the unmanned aircraft with the LG Smart Controller joystick.

LG Friends Manager
Only available in the LG G5, Friends Manager is the hub application that allows the G5 to connect with LG Friends with minimal fuss and effort. LG Friends Manager automatically detects nearby LG Friends and connects quickly and easily in three simple steps, eliminating much of the hassle of pairing devices.
